What Is Unclaimed Money?
Unclaimed money is any financial asset that has been turned over to a government agency because the company holding it lost contact with the owner. The most common types include:
- Forgotten bank accounts — checking, savings, and CDs at banks that closed or merged
- Uncashed checks — payroll, tax refunds, dividends, insurance payments, and rebates
- Life insurance proceeds — policies where the beneficiary didn’t know they were named
- Old retirement accounts — 401(k)s and pensions left at former employers
- Utility deposits — security deposits from old electric, gas, water, and phone accounts
- Safe deposit box contents — abandoned boxes turned over to the state
- Stock and mutual fund shares — from companies that merged, split, or changed names
